Summer season
Last weekend saw a small gap in the persistent showery weather so Fergus jumped at the chance to get some silage made. This winter feed for the cattle is essentially pickled grass , harvested from the flat fields of the Carse ground. With the slow start to the growing season it had been a bit thin on the ground in the last batch of dry weather, but the recent warmth and rain had done it's job and the yield was good. We still have more 'first cut' to get, and then we can sit back and wait for the regrowth before cutting again later in the year.
Our lambing and spring calving was a gift that just kept giving this year. A rogue tup had found its way into our young Hogg lambs so just when we thought we had finished with our lambing we had another 35 first time mums to deal with. We had a good calving - most born in a tight period months ago, but 2 of our ladies decided to hang on, and on, and on. With the last lamb and calf born at the start of the week we can finally call a close on spring just before the school summer holidays start!
Talking of holiday's it's a good chance to remind any local customers to make sure they put a stop on deliveries if you're heading away - just
email in and let us know. At this time of year we are busy with visitors staying at the farmstay, and also heading out on farm tours, and next week we will be away ourselves to the
Global Scottish Agritourism conference which is being hosted in Aberdeen - it will be great to meet other farmers from all round the world.
Produce wise I'm pleased to report that the new chooks are settling in really well and we've just started getting a few tiny wee pullet eggs being laid. Over the next couple of weeks they should all come into lay and begin to size up so hopefully it wont be too much longer until we have some XL double yokers back on the menu. We've got the last of our beef deliveries coming in at the start of next week before the summer so if you're further afield and looking for a 5kg or 10kg beef box, or a bespoke order, to be couriered this is the time to get your order in
Hope
you all have a great summer - may yer grass grow full and lang....
